Idea Box

After attending two LTMs (Learning Team Meetings) and one Faculty Meeting, and leaving feeling frustrated predominantly by what seems to be a gross misuse of resources, I have begun to ask myself the following questions...
1. What are the things that one learns from their parents in their home environment? Ways of being are learned through observation and conditioning from the adults who surround us. Ways of being as opposed to doing. Teachers teach ways of doing but really only the parents/gaurdians teach ways of being whether they acknowledge it or not.
2. What are ways of being that we, as a society deem appropriate, acceptable and necessary for success? My answer is being happy, perhaps not all the time but at least content; being responsible-recognizing that our choices have consequences and being open to the reality of what they are; being respectful-treating all other beings as they truly are, which is precious; being honest- understanding that no true value comes from deception; being open- recognizing the fact that each person's perspective is her/his own and no more meaningful than anyone else's; there are probably more but for now that's it.
3. The next question becomes, whose responsibility is it to teach children ways of being? the teachers or the parents? Looking back at the roots of public education, we see that education was meant to enculturate the masses so they did not become reckless hoodlums. At that time it was done through religious values and the fear of god's wrath. Now though, we find ourselves free from the church's oppression. If the parents are not teaching acceptable ways of being should we let those children fall victim to unacceptable ways of being: cheaters, liars, sloths, et al? Or, should we the educators take it upon ourselves to assist in correcting the misgivings?Perhaps reteaching the parents, helping them evolve and become conscious of their ways of being. In the hopes that they will rise to their sense of responsibility and begin to create an atmosphere where their children have the tools to be successful.

Not So Much About Education but I Needed to Vent..

Okay, this is not really about education. It's about my personal life. I really need to get this off my chest though. So (I admit embarrassingly) that I am on two, free dating websites. Here's the thing, I will send a message from time to time, to someone who I find interesting, for one reason or another. I take the first step to open the lines of communication. Being an individual who knows how to participate in a conversation, I'll ask a question. This is how strangers get to know each other. I don't bombard them with a whole slew of questions just one maybe two. And ALL of these dudes reply by answering the question and that's it. I'm confused, are they uninterested or are they unaware that this will end the conversation?

This whole dating situation is so depressing. I'm intelligent, attractive, funny. I know how to carry on a conversation. I should at least be able to go out and meet people and have fun getting to know them. I really don't want much. I'm not asking for rubies and gems. I'm talking decent conversation with someone who has not been declared mentally ill.

Is this the beginning of the end of our species? I should be able to have sex whenever I want. I go out and if some dude does talk to me he has to take a time out to answer his cell phone. Seriously? Are you fucking kidding me? You can't focus your attention for ten minutes to carry on a conversation without checking your messages? Unless your mom is in the hospital having surgery and you're getting updated about her status, that is completely tasteless. Maybe I'm old-skool but this is bull shit.

In case you're wondering, I do want you to open the door. I even want strangers, in public places, to let me pass before shoving their way through. I want some class. I want you to pick up the tab on the first date, definitely not all of them but for sure the first one. I want you to ask me questions and try to find out more about me, as I will do for you. I may even want you to kiss me, yeah that's right! Man-up, wrap your arm around my waist and kiss me.

There is this guy I met, I think he's cute. He's moving so I'm not even thinking about anything serious. We've hung out and either I'm crazy or homie sends some seriously mixed signals. I've thought: maybe he's gay, maybe he's shy. Maybe you're thinking: it's like that book (and movie) maybe he's just not into me. I thought that too. But he calls me, I totally drop it and he pops back in. What the fuck?

Field Trip Gone Awry

It all started this morning when S came into B's room, where I was sitting avoiding being alone. S proceeded to tell us what happened to her yesterday afternoon. It seems her car began to fail when she attempted to leave work yesterday. Luckily, she was able to get into the mechanic right away and someone from school could follow her there, then take her home. As luck would have it her car started to malfunction on the way to the garage. Little by little important components were shutting down. She managed to roll into a parking spot at the mechanic's before her car bit the dust. Needless to say, I told her about Mercury's current state of affairs (retrograde). She laughed at me, but little did she know the real joke would come much, much later.
This Wednesday, Cinco de Mayo, was also baseball field trip day. I couldn't be more pleased. All I had to do was teach from 8 to 9:15 and then sweat my ass off in the blazing sun with nineteen ducklings in my charge. No biggy, I had been extra prepared this year by forewarning them of my disinterest in shuttling them to and from the bathroom. I thought,"this time this trip will be great", having already forgotten the forboding news I had delivered just this morning.
We left the classroom at 9:20, when we got to the bus loop there were two buses. I led my ducklings onto the bus, we all sat down and got comfortable. Then another class boarded. Not too long after that someone decided we didn't need two buses we were going to all cram into one. My gut told me I liked the bus I was on, but I was outnumbered. We boarded the other bus. It was so packed there were three kids in every seat. We sat two to a seat. We departed. Once we were on the highway something started beeping. At first I thought one of the kids had bumped an emergency exit lever. I scoped out the scene but nothing. The bus driver did not seem phased. In fact, I observed no registered response at all. Eventually, B said, "is there something I could do about that" (gesturing to the beep, which proceeded to speed up like a bomb).
"No," she replied, "It's been in the shop six times."
That is comforting I thought and we drove on. Luckily, we made it to the game. To my great pleasure I had successfully discouraged my students from making unwarranted trips to the restrooms. It was expectedly hot, we all drank tons of water. We left. We got on the bus with an extra teacher. So now three of us would have to share one seat. Back on the highway only minutes and the beep starts beeping again. Beep, beep, beep and suddenly we are steadily slowing down in the third lane from the right. Oh yes, at 1:00 p.m. in sunny South Florida we were breaking down on I-95 with a bus full of 78 fourth graders.
We sat for a moment. The driver radioed others. Then it got even better. A fire rescue truck showed up, followed by a full blown fire truck. No one has told us anything. We began documenting the situation (for future storytelling purposes). I went out photographing only to find a huge gasoline leak at the rear. The firefighters had poured some white powder to prevent this puddle of gas from proceeding, just as we had been stopped from proceeding on our course. Then a school district mechanic arrived. Instead of sending a bus at 1:30 when the students should be dismissed from school in thirty minutes, they sent a mechanic. Any laymen could see that this bus was headed for the school bus graveyard. With all this time to kill and all of these 4th graders to entertain we decided to put on the radio. 102.3, it's the best for hip-hop. Then I lip-synced (not actually knowing the words-so it was more like a kung-fu movie) and danced up and down the aisle of the bus. And that must have worked because just a moment after that another school bus arrived. We made it back exactly at 2:00 and everything was fine.

How to Reform the Education System through Policy Initiatives:

Check out what is going on in education policy. http://www2.ed.gov/news/pressreleases/2010/03/03172010.html

They are talking about a ton of money that is available to the lowest performing schools, via their state. The states can apply for these funds then distribute the money to their districts and the districts must implement one of these models. These are the strategies they have come up with to essentially redesign American public education (or at least shape it's direction in the near future). It seems to me that it must be based on theories that go something like this:

turnaround- the school isn't performing well because the staff is inadequate.

restart- this place is hopeless, let's just get rid of it

school closure- this place is cursed, to break it the whole thing must be dismantled

transformation- the leadership sucks

I guess some of them aren't such bad ideas, I think it all depends on what the ultimate objective is. Frankly, I am not quite sure what the federal government's ultimate objective is. I've heard through the grapevine that it's essentially about ranking. We want to be number one or at least in the top five. I'm just not so sure I'm down with that being the objective. I want the objective to be about people, namely the students, supporting them in being great people. I think the rest will come if we make that our focus.

My Classroom is Dirty

In what other industries are employees expected to work in an unclean environment? The floor in my classroom is filthy. The shelves are covered in dust. The countertops and tabletops have visible gook and schmegma. I already have to purchase my own printer ink, printer paper, pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, etc. Do I need to hire my own cleaning service as well?

It is not the custodian's fault. The real problem is that there are not enough custodians available to adequately clean the entire school. And that is because there isn't enough money in the budget to hire an appropriate amount of custodians to actually keep the classrooms clean.

So until the day comes when we choose the cleanliness of our classrooms as a priority...well, I guess I'll just exist in the filth.

Wasting Time

A few weeks ago we had a Professional Development Day (PDD) at my school. The topic: higher order questions. The purpose of the activities to (once again) tell us about higher order thinking: analysis, evaluation & synthesis. Ironically, the workshop itself only covered the lower levels of thinking: knowledge, comprehension & application. By now you must be wondering what we were doing in this workshop. This was the agenda. The facilitator reviewed (for the hundredth time) Bloom's taxonomy, which is the breakdown of the aforementioned six levels: the lower levels- knowledge, understanding, application & the higher levels-analysis, evaluation and synthesis. Then we were divided into six groups. Each group started at one of the six levels. As a group we were supposed to generate as many words as we could associated with that level of understanding. A simple recall and regurgitation of information. Incidentally, that would fall into the "knowledge" level in Bloom's Taxonomy, the lowest level.
We have been given this information time and again, it has not changed in any way. The administration's objective is to get us (the teachers) to ask these higher order questions, to stimulate higher order thinking among our students. But if that is their objective why not use my time effectively? Give me a chance to sit down with my colleagues (the third to fifth grade math teachers) and allow us to look at the curriculum and actually generate a list of higher order questions. Interestingly enough, giving us an opportunity like that would give us a chance to exercise our higher order thinking skills. In addition, we would have left the workshop with something we could take back to the classroom and use. When will my time be as valuable to them as it is to me?
